What you're trying to book

Tawaraya has been run by the same family for eleven generations. Eighteen rooms, each with its own garden view, tatami floors, and the kind of quiet that is now unusual in central Kyoto. Guests have included novelists, heads of state, and Apple founders — but the ryokan itself does not advertise, does not appear on Booking.com or Relux, and does not have an English website.

The season matters. Autumn leaves (mid-November) and cherry blossom (late March to early April) are booked out nine to twelve months in advance. A weekday in June or September is the realistic window for a first-time visitor.

How reservations actually work

Tawaraya accepts reservations by phone only, in Japanese, usually starting six months out. Staff speak some English but the phone call itself is handled in keigo — polite form that trips up even fluent second-language speakers.

What locals and concierges do: call during Kyoto business hours (10:00–17:00 JST), have your dates and party size ready in Japanese, and ask about the room category before committing. A deposit is usually requested by bank transfer within a few days of confirmation.

The common workarounds are: a hotel concierge in Tokyo will place the call for a tip (¥3,000–¥10,000), a luxury travel agent can package it, or you can email them directly — though email replies are slow and in Japanese.

If you want Moshi Moshi to book it for you

This is exactly the kind of place we built Moshi Moshi for. Tell us the dates, party size, room preference, and any dietary notes — our AI voice agent calls Tawaraya in polite Japanese, handles the back-and-forth about room categories and deposit, and sends you an English confirmation when it's done.

You pay only if the reservation is confirmed. If Tawaraya is booked out, there's no charge, and we'll suggest two or three ryokan of comparable quality that have availability.
