What you're trying to book

Hyotei began as a teahouse for pilgrims walking to Nanzen-ji in the early 1600s and has been serving food to guests for over four hundred years. It currently holds three Michelin stars, and the 14th-generation owner, Yoshihiro Takahashi, still cooks daily.

The signature experience is the Hyotei morning meal — a multi-course breakfast served from 8:00 AM in July and August at ¥8,000 to ¥15,000. The rest of the year, Hyotei serves lunch and dinner kaiseki at the main restaurant, with an à la carte menu at the annex, Hyotei Bekkan.

How reservations actually work

Hyotei accepts reservations by phone only at +81-75-771-4116, during Japanese business hours (9:00 to 20:00 JST). The English-language site exists for information only — there is no online booking, and the front desk conducts calls in Japanese.

If you're staying at a Kyoto hotel, the concierge can place the call. The summer morning meal fills up two to three months out; lunch and dinner kaiseki typically four to six weeks out.

If you want Moshi Moshi to book it for you

This is a clean case. Tell us whether you want the summer morning meal, a lunch, or a dinner; the date; and your party size. We call Hyotei in keigo, confirm the course and time, and send the confirmation in English.

If your date is full, we'll tell you the nearest open dates and hold nothing until you say yes.

Early access

We’ll place the call for you.

Leave your email and the booking you want. We call Hyotei in polite Japanese — you get the confirmation in English. No charge unless the reservation is made.

You only pay if we successfully book. ¥980 per confirmed reservation.

Common questions about booking Hyotei
Does Hyotei accept reservations in English?
No — Hyotei takes reservations only by phone, in Japanese. Travelers without Japanese typically book via a Tokyo or Kyoto hotel concierge, or use an AI-assisted reservation service such as Moshi Moshi to call on their behalf in polite keigo and confirm in English.
How do I book Hyotei from outside Japan?
Hyotei doesn't list any English booking channels. Reservations are taken by phone (+81-75-771-4116) in Japanese. From outside Japan, travelers either ask their Japan-based hotel concierge to call on their behalf, or use an AI-assisted reservation service such as Moshi Moshi.
Where is Hyotei located?
Hyotei is at 35 Nanzenji Kusagawacho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto 606-8437, in the Nanzenji area of Kyoto, Japan.
How far in advance should I book Hyotei?
1–3 months in advance is the standard window for top sushi and kaiseki counters. Smaller counters (under ten seats) and chef's-counter spots fill faster — try as soon as your travel dates are fixed. Some platforms (Pocket Concierge, TABLEALL) open allocations 60 days out.
Will I receive the booking confirmation in English?
Hyotei typically confirms reservations in Japanese, by phone. If you book through Moshi Moshi, the call is placed in polite Japanese on your behalf and you receive a written confirmation in English with the date, time, party size, address, and any specific instructions from the venue (deposit, cancellation policy, dress code, dietary notes).
